After a long flight, the last thing you want is a confusing taxi line, an unlicensed driver or a surprise fare. Here is how the main options compare at European airports, and when booking a transfer in advance is worth it.

Quick Answer

  • Public transport is best for daytime arrivals with light luggage when there is a direct train.
  • Official taxis are fine where fares are fixed (Paris, Rome) and you use the official rank.
  • A pre-booked transfer is best for late arrivals, families, heavy luggage and unfamiliar cities. Kiwitaxi gives you a fixed price and a driver waiting with a name sign.

Option 1: Official Taxis

Some cities set flat fares from the airport. In Paris, official taxis charge a fixed fare from CDG and Orly to the city, with different rates for the Right and Left Bank. In Rome, taxis from Fiumicino and Ciampino to the historic center inside the Aurelian Walls also have a flat fare. Always use the official taxi rank and avoid drivers who approach you inside the terminal: unlicensed drivers target tourists at busy airports.

Option 2: Uber and Bolt

Ride-hailing apps work at many European airports, but what you get varies by country. In some places Uber offers only licensed taxis or premium cars rather than its cheaper options. Bolt operates at more than 100 airports, including Paris CDG, London Heathrow, Frankfurt and Madrid. Prices can surge after late flights.

Option 3: Public Transport

Airport trains such as the Leonardo Express in Rome or the RER B in Paris are cheap and fast in the daytime. They are less convenient at night, with lots of luggage or with small children.

Option 4: Pre-Booked Transfers

A private transfer means a driver meets you at arrivals and drives you straight to your hotel for a price agreed in advance. Prices are per car, not per person, which makes it good value for families and groups.

  4. Book child seats ahead.
  5. Save the driver's and support numbers offline before you fly.

FAQ

What happens if my flight is delayed?

With Kiwitaxi, enter your flight number when booking: short delays are adjusted automatically and there is up to 90 minutes of free waiting after scheduled arrival. For longer delays, contact the driver or support.

Is a pre-booked transfer more expensive than a taxi?

Not always. Transfers are priced per car, so for families and groups they are often similar to or cheaper than a taxi, and the price is fixed in advance.

Can I book a child seat?

Yes, usually for an extra charge. Book it in advance; drivers may refuse to take a child without the required seat.

Is Uber available at European airports?

In many cities, yes, but services vary by country. In some places Uber only offers licensed taxis or premium cars. Bolt operates at 100+ airports.
