Thanksgiving week is the busiest air travel period of the year in the US. On Sunday, November 30, 2025, the TSA screened about 3.13 million people, the most in its history, while on Thanksgiving Day itself it screened about 1.56 million, the quietest day of the whole year. That gap is your biggest opportunity: the day you fly matters more than anything else you can control.
Best and worst days to fly for Thanksgiving 2026
This calendar is based on the TSA's daily checkpoint numbers for Thanksgiving 2025 (when the holiday fell on November 27) shifted to the 2026 dates. The pattern repeats almost exactly every year.
| Date (2026) | Day | How busy | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri, Nov 20 | Friday before | Very busy (about 2.8 million screened on the same day in 2025) | Avoid if you can |
| Sat, Nov 21 | Saturday before | Moderate | A good day to leave early |
| Mon, Nov 23 | Monday before | Busy but manageable | Good choice |
| Tue, Nov 24 | Tuesday before | Busy | Fly early in the morning |
| Wed, Nov 25 | Wednesday before | Very busy (about 2.75 million in 2025) | Avoid afternoon and evening flights |
| Thu, Nov 26 | Thanksgiving Day | Quietest day of the year | Best day to fly if you can eat late |
| Fri, Nov 27 | Black Friday | Moderate | Good for an early return |
| Sat, Nov 28 | Saturday after | Busy | OK in the morning |
| Sun, Nov 29 | Sunday after | Busiest day of the year (record 3.13 million in 2025) | Avoid |
| Mon, Nov 30 | Monday after | Very busy (about 2.9 million in 2025) | Fly early or late |
| Tue, Dec 1 | Tuesday after | Back to normal | Best day to come home |
The best combination: fly out on Saturday, November 21, or Monday, November 23, and return on Tuesday, December 1. If you have to go Wednesday and come back Sunday, take the first flights of the day.
When to book and which flights to pick
- Book now if you have not. Seats on the peak days sell out first, and the cheapest fares go early. Set fare alerts for your route and decide by early November at the latest.
- Take the first flight of the morning. Early planes are usually already at the gate overnight, so they are less exposed to knock-on delays building through the day. If something goes wrong, you also have the rest of the day to be rebooked.
- Fly nonstop when you can. Every connection is another chance for a missed flight or a lost bag. If you must connect, leave at least 90 minutes, and avoid connecting through northern hubs late in the evening when winter weather is forecast.
- Check the fare rules. Basic economy fares on many US airlines allow only a personal item and no seat choice. Our guide to personal item backpacks that fit under the seat shows how to travel with one bag.
- Driving instead? The same peak days apply on the roads: Wednesday afternoon and Sunday afternoon are the worst.
Airport day: ID, security and timing
- Bring a REAL ID or passport. REAL ID enforcement started on May 7, 2025. Travelers without an acceptable ID can now pay a 45 dollar fee for TSA ConfirmID so the TSA can try to verify who they are, with no guarantee it works. Do not rely on it: check your license has the star.
- Arrive two hours before domestic flights, more at big hubs on peak days. Check your airport's security wait times in its app.
- TSA PreCheck and CLEAR save the most time this week. If you have PreCheck, make sure your Known Traveler Number is on the booking.
- Pies are fine, gravy is not. TSA allows solid foods like pies and cakes through security, but gravy, cranberry sauce, jams and wine over 3.4 ounces must go in a checked bag.
- Do not wrap gifts you carry through security: officers may need to open them.
Bags: carry on, track, weigh
Holiday weekends are when bags get misrouted, especially on tight connections. Three cheap habits help:
- Carry on if you can. A bag that never leaves you cannot be lost. A personal item backpack that fits under the seat avoids the fight for overhead space too.
- Put a tracker in every checked bag. An AirTag or Find Hub tag lets you see where the bag is and share its location with your airline. Our luggage tracker guide covers iPhone and Android.
- Weigh your bag at home. Most US airlines cap economy checked bags at 50 lb. Gifts and winter clothes add up fast. A digital luggage scale settles it before you leave.
Delayed or cancelled: your rights
On US flights
- Cancelled flight: if the airline cancels and you choose not to travel or not to accept the rebooking, you are entitled to a refund to your original payment method, not just a credit. DOT rules make this automatic.
- Big delay or change: the same refund right applies when departure or arrival changes by 3 hours or more on a domestic flight, or 6 hours or more on an international flight, and you decide not to fly.
- Delayed bag: airlines must refund the checked bag fee when a bag arrives more than 12 hours late after a domestic flight.
- Meals and hotels are not required by US law. Check your airline's own commitments on the DOT's airline customer service dashboard.
Flying to or from Europe
On flights covered by EU261 (leaving the EU, or arriving on an EU airline), a delay of 3 hours or more at arrival or a late cancellation can mean compensation of 250 to 600 euros, unless it was caused by extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather. AirHelp can check your flight for free; see our flight delay compensation guide.
Travel insurance
Insurance can pay for a hotel night, meals or a missed connection that US law does not cover. Compare EKTA travel insurance or read our travel insurance guide.
When a flight is cancelled at the airport, our step-by-step guide to the first 30 minutes after a cancellation tells you what to do, in order.
Thanksgiving travel packing list
- Power: a power bank under 100 Wh, in your carry-on only. See the new 2026 power bank rules.
- Sleep: a proper travel pillow for early flights.
- Sound: noise-cancelling headphones for crowded gates and crying babies.
- Bags: a tracker, a luggage scale and clear toiletry bags for liquids.
- Long drive or flight: compression socks if your legs swell on long trips.
- Gifts: ship big ones ahead, or pick small ones from our travel stocking stuffers.
