Short answer: pickpockets in Europe almost never slash bags. They open them, usually in a crowd or while someone distracts you. So the feature that matters most is zippers that lock or clip shut, followed by a strap that can't be cut and a way to lock the bag to your chair at a café. For most travelers the Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag is the easy pick; if you'd rather wear a sling, get the Pacsafe Vibe 150. Wear either one crossbody, in front of you, and the bag does most of the work.

Ask anyone who's been to Barcelona, Paris or Rome and you'll hear a pickpocket story: a phone gone from a café table, a wallet lifted on the metro, a backpack opened on a crowded tram. The US State Department says pickpocketing and other theft are "very common" in Spain, and in Italy it warns that "organized groups of thieves and pickpockets operate at major tourist destinations, in train stations, bars, and cafes".
An anti-theft bag doesn't make you untouchable, but it turns you from an easy target into a slow one, and slow is usually enough: pickpockets move on. Below is how they actually work, which features stop them and which are mostly marketing, and six bags worth buying.

Where theft happens in Europe
Checked October 19, 2026, against the State Department's country pages for Spain, France and Italy.
| Country | What the State Department says | Where to be careful |
|---|---|---|
| Spain | Pickpocketing and other theft are very common. Thieves often use distractions | Tourist spots, airports, train stations, urban and beach destinations. Passports have been stolen on planes to and from Spain, at gate changes, baggage claim and taxi lines |
| France | Pickpocketing and phone thefts are common, especially in crowded places | Airports, subways and train cars, tourist attractions, train stations |
| Italy | Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity. Organized groups work at major sites | Buses, metros and trains, major metro and railway stations, tourist sites, bars and cafes |
Notice what's on every list: airports, stations and public transport. These are the places where you're carrying the most (passport, cards, phone, often all in one bag), you're distracted by signs and tickets, and strangers press against you without it seeming odd. Most of your risk is concentrated in the first and last few hours of the trip, and on crowded metro lines in between. Spain's warning about passports stolen on planes is also why your bag with the passport belongs under the seat in front of you, not in the overhead bin.
5 tricks pickpockets use
The crowd squeeze
On a packed metro or at the doors of a train, someone presses in close; a hand opens the bag behind you or under your arm. The doors close and they're gone. Defense: bag in front, zippers clipped.
The distraction
A petition clipboard, a "dropped" ring, a spill on your jacket, a question with a map. While you deal with it, a partner works your bag. Defense: hand on the bag, keep walking.
The table grab
A phone on a café table vanishes under a menu or a flyer slid over it. Defense: phone in a zipped pocket, not on the table.
The chair hang
A bag hung on the back of a chair or set down by your feet walks away. Defense: lock the strap around the chair leg or keep the bag on your lap.
The fifth trick is the easiest one: the open zipper. Most thefts need no skill at all, just a bag that opens with one pull while you look at a monument. Everything an anti-theft bag does is designed to remove that one easy pull.
Which anti-theft features actually matter
- Locking zippers (most important). Zipper pulls that clip to a hook or interlock, so the bag can't be opened with a single quiet pull. Every bag below has them. They're also the part owners complain about most, because they slow you down too. Practice at home.
- A strap that locks around a chair. Pacsafe straps are wire-reinforced and unclip to loop around a chair leg; Travelon has a lock-down strap that does the same. This is your defense at cafés and on trains.
- A cut-resistant strap. Stops the snatch-and-run of cutting the strap. Steel cables inside the strap are standard on all six picks.
- Slash-resistant panels. Mesh or steel wire inside the fabric. Bag slashing happens, but far less often than simple opening. Nice to have, not the reason to buy.
- RFID blocking. Shields cards and passports from wireless reading. It costs nothing extra on these bags, but contactless skimming of travelers is rarely reported; it's not why you need an anti-theft bag. See our passport holder guide for more on RFID.

Best overall: Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Mini Shoulder Bag
A long-running best seller and the simplest way to get every feature that matters. Travelon calls it a five-point system: slash-resistant mesh in all four sides and the bottom, a slash-resistant strap that locks around a chair, locking compartments, and an RFID-blocking organizer with slots for a passport and cards. At 8.5 inches square it holds the essentials without turning into a tote. It's one of the best-selling travel bags on Amazon, and it's sold and shipped by Amazon.
- 8.5 x 8.5 x 2.25 in, about 11 oz
- Locking main compartment, front pocket locks under a magnetic flap
- Strap drop adjusts from 15 to 28 in
Good: every feature that matters in one compact bag, RFID organizer inside, easy returns through Amazon.
What owners complain about: the strap. Several say it's stiff, twists, or digs into the shoulder on long days, which is the price of the steel cable inside. Others had a zipper clip or hook break during a trip; one owner suggests packing a small carabiner as a backup. Long-time buyers feel the quality has slipped on recent versions.
Skip it if you need to carry a water bottle or a tablet: get the Messenger instead.
Best for a full day out: Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Messenger Bag
The bigger sibling, for days when you're out from breakfast to dinner. It has the same locking zippers, slash-resistant mesh panels, cut-resistant strap cables and lock-down strap, plus two water bottle pockets, drop pockets and a tethered key clip in the locking main compartment. A rear zippered pocket holds RFID-blocking card and passport slots.
- About 12.5 x 9 x 3.5 in, about 10 oz
- 2 water bottle pockets, locking main compartment
- Sold and shipped by Amazon
Good: holds a full day's kit, light for its size, all the security features of the Mini.
What owners complain about: comfort on very long walking days: one owner who walked 20,000 to 30,000 steps a day in Italy found the strap uncomfortable. Others say it's narrow and doesn't expand, light colors show every mark (buy black), and a few had a strap fitting or zipper fail.
Skip it if you walk all day and hate shoulder straps: a sling spreads the weight better.
Best sling: Pacsafe Vibe 150
Pacsafe calls itself the original anti-theft brand, and this small sling is its best seller on Amazon. The fabric has a lightweight steel mesh inlay, the zippers interlock, and the wire-reinforced strap unclips so you can lock the bag around a chair or table leg. It holds about as much as a 1.5-liter water bottle: phone, wallet, passport, keys, sunglasses. Wear it across your chest or as a waist pack.
- 13 x 6.3 x 2.4 in, 2.5 liters, 0.82 lb
- Steel mesh fabric, interlocking zippers, RFID pocket
- 5-year Pacsafe warranty
Good: works for men and women, the strap-lock trick for cafés, long warranty.
What owners complain about: the strap is too short for some larger travelers, and the black paint on metal parts wears off. A few found the pockets awkward for right-handed use. One owner in Europe says a zipper opened too easily, which is a reminder to actually clip the zippers. It's sold by a third-party seller, so keep your order details for the warranty.
Skip it if you're tall or broad: check the strap length first, or pick the Travelon Sling.
Best small crossbody: Pacsafe GO Crossbody
A neat, low-key crossbody that doesn't look like a security product. It has cut-proof steel mesh, zipper pulls that hook shut, a wire-reinforced anchor strap that secures it to a chair, and a padded sleeve for a 7-inch tablet or e-reader. The RFID pocket meets the US FIPS 201 standard, and the fabric is recycled polyester.
- 6.3 x 9.5 x 2.8 in, 0.62 lb
- 2 lockable zippered compartments, 7-inch tablet sleeve
- 5-year Pacsafe warranty
Good: the lightest bag here, looks like an everyday purse, fits an e-reader.
What owners complain about: the zipper locks are stiff. Several owners found them hard to open and close, and one with arthritis in her fingers says she couldn't use it. Others say the strap is short for crossbody wear and one owner's outfit pilled where the bag rubbed. It's sold by a third-party seller.
Skip it if you have stiff hands: the Travelon locks are easier to work.
Best for men: Travelon Anti-Theft Classic Sling Bag
A sling with the Travelon security system and more room: a locking 5.5-liter main compartment with RFID card and passport slots, a padded tablet sleeve and a stowable side pocket for a water bottle. The padded strap has cut-resistant cables inside. It's sold and shipped by Amazon.
- 5.5-liter locking main compartment
- Padded tablet sleeve, stowable bottle pocket
- Sold and shipped by Amazon
Good: room for a day's kit, a tablet sleeve, easy returns.
What owners complain about: things can fall out when you open it, because the main zipper is a single zipper across the top. Some found the strap bulky or painful, the bag stiff, or the zippers on the side facing their body, which means taking it off to get things out. One reviewer makes a fair point: snatching is more common than slashing, so the lock-down strap matters more than the mesh.
Skip it if you want quick access while walking: the Pacsafe Vibe 150 is easier to reach into.
Best for a laptop: Pacsafe Vibe 325
A slim 10-liter sling daypack that still fits a 13-inch laptop. Both compartments have lockable zippers, the fabric has a steel mesh inlay, and the wire-reinforced strap unclips to lock around a table leg. Wear it on your back between sights and swing it to the front on the metro.
- 15.8 x 9.1 x 3.2 in, 10 liters, 1.23 lb
- Padded sleeve for a 13-inch laptop, RFID pocket
- 5-year Pacsafe warranty
Good: carries a laptop with real anti-theft features, slim enough for a café chair.
What owners complain about: it's designed to be swung around from one side, which some right-handed owners found awkward; one says the strap rubbed the neck. Others say the laptop sleeve is tight, the padding wears quickly and there's little depth for a water bottle. It's sold by a third-party seller.
Skip it if you don't need a laptop on day trips: a smaller bag is less to watch.
The verdict
Buy the Travelon Classic Mini if you want one bag for a city trip and you'll carry only the essentials. Buy the Pacsafe Vibe 150 if you prefer a sling and want the bag to work for anyone in the family. Need more space? The Travelon Messenger for a full day out, the Pacsafe Vibe 325 if a laptop comes along.
How to wear it so it works
- Crossbody and in front. On the metro, in lines and in crowds, the bag sits on your stomach with your hand resting on it.
- Clip every zipper, every time. The locks only help when they're used. Practice at home until it's quick.
- Never hang it on a chair. At cafés, keep it on your lap or loop the strap around the chair leg.
- Phone off the table and out of back pockets.
- Split your money. One card and some cash in the bag, a backup card back at the hotel or in a money belt or neck wallet under your clothes.
- Carry a photo of your passport. The State Department suggests carrying a copy of the bio page and leaving the passport in the hotel safe when you don't need it.
- On planes and trains, the bag with your passport goes under the seat in front of you, not in the overhead bin. Put a luggage tracker in the bigger bags.
If something is stolen
- Freeze your cards first in your bank's app, then call the bank if needed.
- Lock and locate your phone with Find My or Find My Device from a travel companion's phone.
- Report it to the local police and ask for a written report. You'll need it for any insurance or credit card claim.
- Passport gone? Contact the nearest US embassy or consulate; they can replace a lost or stolen passport. In Italy, note that a passport reported lost or stolen can be refused for entry if you find it and try to use it again.
- Claim it. Some travel insurance policies and some credit cards cover stolen belongings, often with limits per item. Check your policy wording; our travel insurance guide explains what to look for.
FAQ
Are anti-theft bags worth it for Europe?
For cities known for pickpocketing, yes. Most thefts rely on a bag that opens with one pull or sits unattended on a chair. Locking zippers and a strap that locks around a chair remove both chances, and pickpockets usually move on to an easier target.
Which European cities have the most pickpockets?
Big tourist cities with crowded public transport, such as Barcelona, Paris and Rome, have the worst reputations. The US State Department warns that pickpocketing is very common in Spain and common in France and Italy, especially at airports, train stations, on public transport and at major sights.
Is a crossbody bag or a backpack safer against pickpockets?
A crossbody or sling worn in front is safer, because you can see and touch it. A backpack is out of sight on your back; if you carry one, wear it on your front on the metro and keep valuables in an inner pocket.
Do I need RFID blocking when I travel?
It's a cheap bonus, not a must. Contactless skimming of travelers is rarely reported, while physical theft is common. Choose a bag for its zippers and strap; the RFID pocket comes free on all six picks.
Is Travelon or Pacsafe better?
Both work. Travelon bags look like classic purses and are often sold and shipped by Amazon, which makes returns easy. Pacsafe bags use steel mesh fabric, come with a 5-year warranty and look more like outdoor gear. Pick by style and size.
Where should I keep my passport in Europe?
In the hotel safe on days you don't need it, with a photo of the bio page on your phone. On travel days, keep it in a zipped, locked inner pocket of a bag worn in front, or in a neck wallet under your clothes.
